1995: My Second Tattoo

1995: My Second Tattoo tattoos
Image by armchairdj My second tattoo, done by the late Suzanne Fauser at Creative Tattoo in Ann Arbor, MI, in 1995. It's Delerium of The Endless, another character from Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman." Again, I went for the "direct translation of a comic-book panel," this one by Jill Thompson, from the Sandman arc "Brief Lives." (She was a little freaked out when I showed it to her at a signing at Chicago Comics years later.) Suzanne was a true artist, and this is one of my favorites. She did more to translate the original art into a tattoo-approriate configuration. She simplified the pattern in the dialogue balloon, which is much more tie-dyed in the original. She also translated the color of the shadow on Delirium's face from grey to a freckle brown. Otherwise, she kept enough of the original flavor that it totally looks like Jill's work - Tori Amos-style lips and all. Now that my sleeve is coming a long, this piece looks pretty faded surrounded by brand-new ink. We'll probably freshen up the color at some point.
